About RECOSI - the Responsible Commodities Sourcing Initiative
The Responsible Commodities Sourcing Initiative (RECOSI) is a membership organisation set-up by large utilities who recognise that by working together they can have a much greater impact on improving the sustainability performance of their commodities supply chains.
Our organisation has over a decade of experience in operating an international standard and assurance framework for coal – the Bettercoal Programme – which was created in 2012.
While our members are mostly based in Europe, our reach is global. We have completed over 70 assessments across four continents.
Due to the ongoing success of Bettercoal, we have expanded our work programme by collaborating with members to develop a new gas supply chain due diligence framework – the RECOSI Gas Programme.
Together, we drive continuous improvement in responsible commodity sourcing, working with companies to improve how they produce energy commodities and align with international best practice.
We do this through the development of sector-specific assessment and assurance programmes that monitor and evaluate ESG performance; with third-party verification at the core of our work.
Regulatory requirements and supply chain management support for energy providers
Our work supports members in demonstrating responsible sourcing practices and contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as the UN Guiding Principles.
Growing legal and regulatory requirements across Europe have prompted our members to explore how RECOSI can extend support across their supply chains.
While our work initially focused on coal, through the Bettercoal Programme, it has now expanded to cover gas. Building on over a decade of experience in undertaking ESG assessments of mine sites alongside our technical partner, Equitable Origin, we are working collaboratively with stakeholders to carry our expertise over into gas.
In 2024, we are accelerating our work in the RECOSI Gas Programme and looking to grow the community of members that support continuous improvement in responsible commodity sourcing.
Our work programmes will continue to evolve to meet the needs of our members.
