Vattenfall joins RECOSI Gas Programme
Published on July 1, 2024
London – Responsible Commodities Sourcing Initiative (RECOSI) is pleased to announce that Vattenfall remains committed to the RECOSI Gas programme, supporting efforts to develop a new due diligence framework for gas.
Following the completion of the sale of its former Vattenfall Heat Berlin unit, now the BEW Berliner Energie und Wärme AG, Vattenfall no longer operates any coal-fired power plants and the RECOSI membership has been transferred to BEW Berliner Energie und Wärme AG. With the decision to join the RECOSI Gas Programme, Vattenfall have demonstrated its continued commitment to working collaboratively to improve the sustainability performance of their gas supply chain.
Katie Warrick, RECOSI Executive Director, welcomed Vattenfall, stating: “It is an important step for the RECOSI Gas Programme to have Vattenfall onboard, with the programme benefitting from their expertise and leadership. By working collaboratively with members, we can help them meet the evolving regulatory requirements and serve as an important tool for informed and responsible sourcing decisions”.
Annika Ramsköld, Vattenfall’s Head of Sustainability, noted: “Vattenfall is committed to enable the fossil freedom that drives society forward, and our goal is net zero emissions by 2040 for our own operations, our suppliers and our customers. However, along that journey we aim to ensure that as long as we need natural gas, it will be sourced in a responsible manner. Hence, we’ve decided to remain a RECOSI member and support the Gas Programme, as we strongly believe that joining forces to address common challenges helps to make a difference and pushes the sustainability bar higher.”
Vattenfall is one of Europe’s largest producers and retailers of electricity and heat, employing approximately 21,000 workers, with main markets in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and the UK.
RECOSI is a membership organisation set-up by large utilities who recognise that by working together they can have a much greater impact on improving the sustainability performance of their commodities supply chains. The organisation has over a decade of experience in operating an international standard and assurance framework for coal and has expanded its work programme by developing a new gas supply chain due diligence framework.
